2010 Red Cap Users

Barry,I use a digital bathroom scale and my youngest daughter.I check her alone 3 times-then 3 times with the fawn.The most it varies if at all is .2 lbs.My friends have a plate that later goes in there chute system -I will take pics and get the name for you.Our vet has requested us to do a fawn study and weighing them every week is part of that study.

Also my fawns were all 7.8-8.5 lbs when born.The one I gave my nephew was 6.9

Mine take it with no problem and play...And yes mine eat.... grass,pellets,bread and shredded carrots and very skinny strips of apples.
 
wow thats a lot of milk. i have been feeding my 5wk olds 11-12oz 3x day 4wk olds 9oz day and 2wk olds 7-8oz per day red cap with 1tsp of milk replacer per bottle but they act like they are starving to death after they eat should i be feeding more or is this amount ok?

Why are the people that add formula, adding it?

And if you like formula why are you mixing it with red cap?





We started the Straight red cap thing Because WE FEEL(straight Red Cap People)...it was easier and healthier and no mixing And the deer digested it so much better and the bottles didn't get that slime grease stuff in them and the mixed up stuff goes sour quicker...SO...Why Mix???

It seems to defeat all the purposes Some of us went to red cap.



Straight Red Cap Costs more... But I feel it does them so much better.

The One person I know, mixes his to bring the cost down (cause he sells formula)...

But that is the only reason, I know of.
 
Trigger.....it is up to you but you are doing almost exactly what we are doing.....them acting hungry all the time to me is a very positive sign, as soon as one does not act hungry you have an indication to be watching for something wrong



Make sure you are also supplying them grain and good quality hay preferably alfalfa, my 6 weeks old will all strand around a new pile of hay and gobble it up....

I believe i started the use of replacer in the red cap milk, we even did this when we fed raw goats milk, I like to add something to the red cap because i believe it lacks some things, that is why if I had my preference i would feed goats milk but i do not have a reputable supplier.



I also do not feed all they want which i am sure you are aware of because i like to keep them hungry, I believe a hungry fawn is a healthy fawn, I dont have a problem with people feeding all they want or not adding replacer it is just not my prefered way of taking care of my fawns.



No one has reccomended that everyone use replacer in their red cap milk, I believe evreyone doing it has made that decision on there own.... No one has defeated any purposes, everyone still feeds what they choose and how they do it.



I have a video link posted above of some of our red cap girls, i believe it should prove that it works, not saying yours does not...... Keep doing what you prefer and what has worked for you, I told everyone that contacted me, dont switch if what they were already doing was working for them.

Your deer always look great (I watch your video's) last year and this year I just Wondered.

Why some mix it.

The (red cap crew) Last year always stated if something is working don't switch...But that we had the biggest healthiest fawns ever,Over using formula.

I still remember and laugh about Allen's Red Cap Girls Picture...LOL



AND I think it was GREAT of you to share your program with EVERYONE :eek: that wanted it!!!!!
 
Some one told me last year a good indicator as to wether it is working or not is How many of your doe fawns successfully breed,



All my 2009 doe fawns bred last year and as far as i can tell right now they bred in Dec, ( still have one to go) just so i dont decieve anyone, we only had 3 doe fawns last year in with button bucks and they all bred, they may have even been bred by a red cap boy as there was 3 of them in there.

Wasn't a miss print, i didn't want to experiment with my AI fawns and the one he has is from a shooter buck.

She is also eating feed-does anyone know how many times a doe nurses a day or how much they get at a feeding and if that amount increases as the fawn gets older?

I'd sure need a nap after that -she is eating about a handfull of feed a day right now-which is more than my others that are getting fed 3 times a day.

I do not feel (if what you are doing is working)....one way is better than another. However, after talking with several different farmers and vets i have come to the conclusion that mixing formula with the Red Cap is a great idea..........and feeding a little less and not all they want to eat is better.....I agree with Rick that a hungry fawn is a healthy fawn............I am finding out that a very full belly with lots of milk sloshing around is a good place for bacteria to accumulate and therefore making the fawns sick........so taking formula and mixing it with the red cap bringing the nutritional factors up makes sense to me.........now this is how i feel after a couple years of doing the straight red cap.....lots of people are doing it with straight Red cap and it is working for them and if that is the case don't change! The bottom line is we are all after healthy fawns and if yours are healthy stick with what works!!!
 
Our previous years we feed Zoologic but this year we decided to use Rick's method and love it. The fawns are doing great and the cleanup is so much easier. This year we used Ultra 24 formula because so far we only have 4 doe fawns to bottle feed and 40# of Zoologic would be way too much. We also think that adding the formula gives it the extra nutrients that they need that straight Red Cap doesn't have.
 
Its funny I keep hearing the same thing from the redcap/formula feeders that redcap is missing something and doesn't have the extra nutrients they need.

Exactly what are these things its missing and how do you know they need it?

Cant they get these things from the feed ?

Not trying to keep this thing going but if you can convince me with SPECIFICS I might follow your lead.
