Dennis I may be giving you a ring in the near future. I am always open to learning a new trick or technique that may help me and the farms I AI at. Thanks for offering!

RLA, I have done the same thing regarding splitting straws and putting whole straws in. I think if the semen is good, it does not matter whether or not you put in a whole or half a straw. I know that 3 years ago my friend went out on a limb trying to help some one out. We AI'd 30 does to one buck, we only had 6 does take out of 30...... This happened at a couple other places that I was aware of, I'm sure a few that I am not aware of too. I think the quality of semen is extremely important. Needless to say we did not use semen from there again. That put us back several years taking some of our best does out of the AI program. I have a few things I am going to do a bit different this year in hopes of better success.

Pushing that semen in her is about the least important part when it comes to breeding. I believe the next years success starts the minute she drops her fawns from the year before. Its all about her health, care, stress and date you are breeding. IMHO Anyways.

The one thing I am going to do this year is look at a sample from each straw under a microscope, I have never done that before but dont ever plan to do a.i. with out it in the future. If I have a straw that is bad I would like to know before I use it.

I also agree with Mike, anyone can put the semen where it belong's. It is all about the health of the animal and all of the step's you must take leading up to the a.i. that determin's the outcome.

And the Step's to do this is ????

I do my own AI now.. this year I got 60%

Thanks

Joe

We LAP AIed 8 does. 7 out of 8 took. 6 of the does the semen was split 3 times and 2 split twice. The one that did not take was from the 3 way split, of the 7 that took we had 19 fawns but 2 were under developed and dead at birth. We also ******l AIed 2 and both of those took, 1 had a single and the yearling doe had Quads one was dead at birth but it looked fine dont know if she laid on it or what happened to it :-(. So total from our AI 9 out of 10 take, aint bad with 23 fawns alive and on the ground:).

I am open to doing AI in OK. It would depend on how many animals your wanting to breed, and when you are looking to do your AI. I have dates penciled for Alabama, Missouri, and TX. PM me and we can chat.

Joe, I do not think it is all dependent on the steps leading to the AI date. I believe however that this plays a bigger part in the success than most people give credit for. I am glad to hear you ended up with 60% this last breeding season.
