Best Stray Dog Defense

I would like some input from experienced individuals regarding a few points. First, I'm looking to defend my pens from stray dogs in the best possible manner. I know how to deal with them while I'm home, I'm a proud NRA Member. However, at night or when I'm not home is what worries me. I have two thoughts-Great Pyrenees to watch over my herd or a separate electric fence placed approximately 20 feet from my deer fence.



My question with the Great Pyrenees is would they discourage a stray dog from running the deer AND if the Great Pyrenees begin barking at the stray dogs, does that get the deer wound up? If so, it would defeat the purpose. I like the idea of the Great Pyrenees because it's also an alarm system but I want to do what is most cost productive.



I know the dogs are pricey and you have to find a reputable breeder. The area I would fence, isn't huge, maybe 2-3 acres. I have read the older post discussing the Great Pyrenees and really like the idea but I need to chose the best option.

My dogs....which are mutts.....are great gaurds against anything "bad". They even come in the pens with me and my deer are fine with them to the point that they lick each other, but if they start barking around the pens the deer do get wound up.



I was really thinking about the guard mule myself.
 
Electric fence but more important than that, spend some money and get high quality black plastic weed barrier (the cloth doesn't work) in 4' lengths or higher. Prevents dogs from seeing your deer. I am double fenced and installed this 8' all the way around and now have complete peace of mind. Prevents hunters from mistaking my deer for wild ones. Works well for coyotes and bear also. I lost deer to dogs once, they never got into my main enclosure but they ran up and down the fence barking and trying to dig underneath. This method put a stop to that. And I haven't even installed my electric fence yet. Really, it works great. Too many things spook our deer including trespassers who want to get a closer look. There's no way to see my deer unless you climb the fence.
 
I had trouble with black bear running my deer into the fence, I had two bear in my back yard at my fawn pen two weeks after they ran a fawn into the fence and hurt it bad, I yelled and fired a shot right over ones head and they just looked at me , they werent afraid of me or my shotgun so I got a blue nose pitbull puppy , put her in the pen with my deer and fawns , deer were not afraid of her, bottle fed fawns licked her, This spring My now 129 pound pit is full grown loves the kids .deer. chickens, and even farm cats but dont try and mess with any of them!! She protects!! Had those same two bear showed up this spring , left (Maya) My bluepit out and she went right for those bear! No fear! they swated at her and she just circled them and bit them, Those bear ran off roaring all the way with maya on there A$% !!! Never seen those bear since or any stray dogs, or trespassers for that matter, Best protection investment I ever made!!! Good Luck!!!!

The only problem I see with the dog is you will have to be there to release him when you see something happening. Unless these dogs stay with the deer at all times.
 
That's the best idea deer chaser also I like double fence with shade cloth on both sides also. Timmon also will work if u can find it but the 243 or 300win mag works the greatest

I usually don't believe in shooting them unless I see them! LOL
 
We are basically triple fenced. 10 acre electric around entire property, double 8ft fence, and then the pens with 6ft high shade cloth. After suffering a dog attack at our old farm and losing some very valuable does, we didn't want to take any chances at the new farm. This may not be feasible for everyone to do, but it's worked wonders for us.

I won't be surprised if we are not all required to have our farms double fenced in the future ....unless we fight these crazy regulations.......I had a deer get out in the storm we had a couple days ago.....I reported it to the Dept. Of Ag.......they informed me that I should not be surprised to get a fine from the game commission......just another stupid attempt to stick it to the deer farmer.......they can try an fine me but it won't get paid......enough is enough!
 
Won't even bite Dear John.....everyone knows what a jerk you are!! Even better you should keep your mouth closed!!
 
Thanks for all the comments. I like the double fence idea but hate the the fact that it will cost exactly twice the amount for the same size enclosure. I think it sure would put my mind at ease. I haven't lost any deer to dogs but have seen them near my pen many times. I'm trying to be proactive instead of reactive. Thanks again.
 
You can still do the plastic weed barrier on the outside of the fence. It's just one more way you can be proactive. Dogs don't see the deer so their instinct to chase doesn't kick in. I've watched this work. Yes, I have double fence, but it was the material that ultimately gave me the peace of mind I needed.

No Dear John we had a storm here with very high winds....can you figure the rest out?! I doubt it! As far as it being a joke......there is a time to joke and a time not too....when someone has a deer escape I would say is not a good time to joke......
 
Hello Hollowroad, Did you sell all of those good looking bucks? My question is, Do you know the mil. or thicknes of the plastic and how are you fastening it to the wire to keep the wind from blowing it off, also, how long will the plastic last before it breaks down?
 
Yep, I just sold all my three year olds. Thanks for the nice comment. I will get you the specs on that material, I bought it from an industrial supply store. It was well worth it. I attached it to the fence with firring strips ( one on each side of the fence) to prevent tearing. The stuff comes in long lengths and you have to cut it, I used a chainsaw.



I'm sure the dogs can smell them but they can't see the deer so they move on. I've been present when dogs were there without the material and the dogs would get worked up by the sight of the deer panicking. The dogs chase instinct will kick in and they won't stop barking and chasing. When they couldn't see...they just moved on with no barking.
