We had some excellent discussions regarding the merits and benefits of closed vs open state borders in a previous post that had to be deleted.

I am opening this thread to continue that discussion in a somewhat more private forum.

So jump right in and state your views (politely off course :))

Thanks,

Russ

I say open. Straight from the game wardens mouth. There has never been a recorded case of CWD in PAor Ohio. Quite frankly I have wild deer comming to myfence, fighting my bucks through the pens. Smelling one another, playing etc etc. What stops the spread of disease? Nothing. I live right on the state line. Im in Ohio, my mail box is in PA. Do people honestly believe that the deer stop in the middle of the road and say..can't go there that's another state?....lol I have always believed that alot of the laws are about controll and money. Only my opinion!

I say open borders promote interstate commerce and help keep the deer business competitive. Closed borders restrict interstate commerce and artificially inflate the prices of deer. If you don't believe me, try to buy a reasonably priced deer in any stste with a closed border.

I agree Scott open borders are the only way to go.If a state starts with open borders everyone can get in the business at reasonable prices but with closed borders the guys who get in early can and do command high prices for grade deer.

Closed borders also limit the hunting ranch’s ability to purchase bucks sell hunts and expand. When hunting ranch’s prosper and grow so does the breeding industry. When the breeding operations control the hunting ranch’s both will suffer in the long run.

Open all the way!!! Is Texas saying, "all your testing is no good" ? I think it may make us look bad to the general public that doesn't know any better. It also shows what kind of people are in charge in Texas. We all know it was a con job to keep the powerful in charge. It is rather ridiculous that any state could be controlled by private individuals like that.

I also think states with closed borders probably tend to divide the industry. Earlier there was a thread on getting a campaign going to promote the industry. I've had several people say "why give to something that is going to benefit the preserves in Texas". I can't say that I disagree with them.

Open up the borders add the industry will grow... if not sooner or latter it will die.

A thousand enemies outside the house are better than one within.

As a deer community we need to stand together...there are plenty of people fighting us...We need to lock arms to stand strong, not take hits at each other.

If we focus on each other a wolf will slip in! Then it's too late for coulda,woulda,shoulda...

I love deer and do not want someone to be able to tell me

~ I CAN'T HAVE THEM~

WE NEED TO STAND TOGETHER

I'm for open borders, But I also support States Rights. My question is: Who makes the decision to close the border, and was it a true represention of the farmers. And by the way, closed borders means closed borders NO EXPORTS OUT

I totaly agree with closed means closed no in means no outs. Maybe if there were some rules on this people would have different idea on closeing borders. Some states have no choice but some do!!!

Wish we would of had one of those yes or no vote polls on top of first page of this thread.

Thanks Russel Good question. It has Texas deer breeders divided and La is thinking of closing their borders.

If there are any Texas breeders reading this thread. Could you tell us what the benefits are of closed borders. Most of us do not understand how it is good for the state with closed borders and the industry as a whole.

At times it is sad that we institute laws and turn people into out laws

I quoted earlier "thinking of closing La. borders". What I should have said is I talked to some breeders from La who if they had their way they would close the La borders.

I do hope they stay open. It will hurt breeders on both sides of the state line.

Louisiana is not closing our borders - I do not know where you heard that but it is not true

I may not be seeing the whole picture and could be wrong but, I think the general opinion of most established breeders in a closed state would be to leave them closed... We entered the breeding market under the current conditions of closed borders. If you opened them now it would obviously drive the prices down hurting the people that bought in earlier or have been established for a years. If the borders were open when we got in the business it would be a different story. I understand why most people in other states that have desirable animals would want to open them and enter this market. If i were in the other shoes i would want the same from a financial standpoint.... But it is hard for me to belive that anyone in our shoes, if they were completely honest would not view this like the majority of us...

I'm in alabama also and can tell you I'm 100 percent for open borders.I know prices will drop if the borders open but then at least we would have a true and honest market not the pyramid scheme we have now.If our market is so good then lets keep all our deer in state, closed out closed in,and see how long before the bubble burst.

In a recent conversation with some goverment officials the only barriers to deer crossing the canadian border with deer moving north is a minimum CWD status and EHD antibody testing , tb and brusilosis test, still waiting on the complete protocol
