Pictures of your white and pied deer

Here is a big ole typical pied named Brutus. He is the sire to our white buck Zeb and his pied brother Brooke. Brutus is owned by my friend and fellow farmer Tom Baker, who helped me get started. The following pictures were taken today. The pied and white fawns are out of Zeb and brown does.

Jack, I'm pretty sure Brutus just turned 7. I can check with Tom. The pictures don't due him justice. He really looks good in person. Allen

I could tell you anything you wanted to know about color genetics in the cocker spaniel but deer genetics I am trying to get a handle on so my question is this:

Does the pied color come from crossing pure whites to browns or is there a separate gene that causes the separation of color?

Thanks!

Kimber

Two different gene's...Well Three to really mess you up...

There is

1.Albino (all white pink eyes) can come from any deer.

2.Senneca Whites (White with brown eyes) had to have Senneca in bloodlines somewhere.

3.Pied (White and Brown Blue eyes mostly) OR...(White with blue eyes) But their eyes can be shades of green(mine aren't...but others are) had to have Pied in bloodlines somewhere.

Is my best way to explain it...Jack...Allen...Did I cover everything???

Good job Billie Jo, All my whites have brown eyes. Most of the pieds have blue, with a couple being brown. Like some one posted a while back, ( may have been Billie Jo) its like an easter egg hunt at fawning time. Allen

I think you did a good job in explaining that Billie Jo. An easter egg hunt is a good description, but at our house we compare fawn season to Christmas Morning. It's always exciting to see who gives us what!!

GCW matt, I was writing the same time you were. You need some deer with piebald genetics to get piebalds. The deer that are piebald usually are the ones that give the better colors. I do have two piebald does for sale, a 2 yr old and a 1 yr old. I also have semen from my big typical piebald PATCH available. He scored 172" last year as a clean 5 x 5 and looks to be much bigger this year. If you want to know more you are welcome to call me on my cell 304-288-4090

New Pied buck fawn with another pied buck and his mom...Two yearling pieds still need to fawn.

so how did you pied deer farmers do this year for fawns? Im talking pieds and whites, vs your normal brown fawns. Painted you seem to have a lot of pics of beautiful pied fawns this year, did you have brown fawns born there too?? Thanks for the pics

Thank-you...

Yes... a lot of great fawns Brown ,White, and Pied... I have three different herds.I will be Ai'ing Pied Doe's With great stuff this year and will be breeding them with Maxbo XL and several other great bucks next year...I want to see how nice we can get the Pieds ...Unfortunately people inbred them in the past and they had health problems out of it and gave Pieds a bad name...Now several farmers are making sure to breed them correctly...I think they will go along way...If you think about the Pieds in the wild they have a lot harder time as fawns and deer and they make it ...So I feel they are not inferior health wise like people think...because of a few people inbreeding.

Out of my pied breeding I normally end up a little more than 50/50 being Pied.

I never breed a Pied to a Pied.

Out of the Pied breeding's You will get a solid fawn that will throw a Pied fawns...I also will not breed that solid deer to a Pied.I have about 15 Pieds on my farm right now.I have about 50 brown deer and Fallow deer.I need to count them and separate color and kind I guess.

My three herds are one totally certified herd (Breeder herd) 7 year CWD TB /BD

one herd that is 7 year CWD but no tb/bd status (shooter herd) can test if sold.

and my ones that were pets that I didn't tag till I had to (I like the natural look)

Call if you have more questions.

If you look under Painted Meadows in the farm section you can see some of my bloodlines in brown and Pieds.

Here is ZEB he just chugs along.
