[quote name='SJames']Ignoring any age or pedigree, which buck would you rather have in your pen as a breeder? (Choose A for the Typical, and B for the Non-Typical.

If I dont know anything about each buck It would be A

If I could ask one question about each before choosing, it would be What are they producing. I would choose the one thats producing bucks like A.

ok....I will be different...I would not pick either one. Being true to myself , I like a rack that goes up some , turns ahead and the tips come in a little. The typical deer in the pic has beams that keep going out. I also want to see the beams fairly level as they come around and not angle upward for most of their length. And my real pet peeve are beams that don't end in one nice point. If you look at any of the sale catalogs it is hard to find beams that do this. Ok, what buck do I like.....well Redoy Bill always catches my eye every time I see his picture. Of the here and now bucks Hardcore has most of what I like to see as well as Shadow @2 . Shadow went a lot more non typical as he got older.Banshee also catches my eye.

The kind of genetics that are in most of our bucks seems to have them go quite non typ. in later years. I love a typical rack , nice tine length, strong brows of not extraordinary length and matching the rest of the rack. Yes , I don't need huge inches but a buck that takes your eye and represents an exceptional Whitetail Deer. I have one breeder that is some out of the norm but is not my favorite with lots of mass and some different shape to his beams but still they end in one point. If I had to pick out a buck that would stay true to his younger looks and pass this on , I am not sure which one or ones I would choose. I think the industry was hugely successful at taking a wild animal and changing the looks , conformation of the antlers, and ability to grow more on their heads . But I think in the rush for inches a lot of the dignity and style of a wild whitetail deer was lost. And with the success of advancing the inches , and hunters liking the more typical look, we have the problem of producing less inches for the market but selling by the inch , we stand to make less money. I know I have some 170 eight points that have 12 inch G2's that when "hunter" people stop to look at my deer , they look right past the bucks well over 200 and go on and on about the eight points. It still always amazes me. Jim

Everyone choses A but ask a hunt ranch operation which one they would make more money on harvesting.

Having been a hunt facility your right the larger score will produce more money. But my guess is for every non typical with supper score you sell you will have 15 or so of the typical or smaller non typical class bucks sold. There are only so many of the supper high price animals that you will have hunters for.

Thanks everyone. This is going to be a great discussion! Feel free to continue to tear the deer apart. Thats what I put them up there for! I've been in this business since I bought my first deer in 1992 but feel like I just started to really learn how to breed whitetails in the last couple years.

When making your choice and posting your comments, one other assumption I want people to make is that both bucks would produce a majority of bucks similar to them selves. Don't even consider does in this discussion, we'll save that for the next one!

I am going to save my comments until the poll ends on Thursday night. Then I'll tell you how I voted. :p

I voted for A, However if I was hunting buck B would be my choice, He's got the freak factor.

Heck Sam, I would like to breed with them both. But if I could only pick one to breed with it would be the buck with the most main frame points, tine length and grosses the highest typical score. In this case B from the pictures may take A

In the hunting arena it is known 75% of hunters prefer typicals. But if you have a 200 inch typical and a 300 inch non-typical in front of a hunter and they are priced the same we all know which one will be shot most of the time

NK well said. "THE LOOK IS THE HOOK" For me. AAAAAAAAAAAAAA But a LITTLE TRASH in the RIGHT spot NEVERRRRRRRRRR HURT!!:)

I agree. I love a typical frame with some extra bone in the right places. Btw, I voted for A, but I'd like to merge those deer into one and then breed with it

I love to see the non-typicals grow, and love growing them, but they dont seem too sell as well. I voted "B", because thats what I like. But know that buck "A" will sell better. So now that I say I like the non-typical, my main breeder is PJ, go figure.

Sorry , I was really supposed to pick one.....that would be A. Both represent a lot of breeding to look as each does and I am sure they come with high pedigrees. I was not showing any disrespect to these bucks just over expressing my own personal likes and dislikes. +1 on as many tines going up off the beams , to get as good a score as possible and be typical , this is a must. Jim

I think it matters what industry your in. Been watching this board a while and it seems there are two industries in the whitetail business. Breeders and shooters. I picked B because I can't build a business plan around the breeeder market in Texas.

Buck B scores alot more so I would go with him. I would go with pedigree if that was an option but in this case it isn't. I just think that if I want to raise big deer it doesn't hurt to have a big deer for your breeder.

Its gotta be B.He will produce larger typical animals with more mass and more flyers/stickers,if crossed with good does.Just what I would do.....

Sam, Im sure just about everybody would say buck A, why do people breed with a certain buck? It is because they want offpring that resembles thier father. If I buy semen from a buck I am buying it because of what I think it think it will do for my program. If I am going for breeding stock my awnser will be different than if I am breeding for shooter bucks. Many people buy semen and offspring based on whos name is on the title of the buck, my opinion is that these people will soon be left behind and the people who invest in deer based on good traits and proven pedigrees will be raising top notch animals. We have seen this industry change alot in the past few years and it will continue to change. The last time I mentioned the fact that the movement was towards more mainframe breeder bucks,I unintentionally P.O.ed someone, but I will end with this, if I were selling hunts by the inch I would rather raise 500 inch bucks, but if I was raising the bucks that appeal to my personal taste I will go with the big frames everytime. Darren thats what I call being light on everyone feet, ...... some people can sell.... others can't give it away, is it fair........ it's life

I am not speaking about myself when I say that some breeders cant get good prices,I have been blessed to have made agood living at what I love doing. I feel for the guys who have been pioneers of our industry and cant seem to pay the feed bill.
