We Had A Attack On Our Deer This Morning

We had a group of three or four dogs get around our pens early one morning a couple years ago.they split up and could get on two sides of the pen..we had predator wire down and they couldn't get in but it didn't matter.the deer went absolutely nuts..one broke neck and lots of hurt deer..so we ran a four strand hot wire that was rated to run about 75mi I think...very few problems since..well worth the cost...

[quote name='Split-Hoof']Dave,

If you have a perimeter fence, guard donkeys are the way to go! Jennies are the best next to gildings. Males with their junk are way too aggressive. I am currently using a miniature mule that is big for a mini. He chases everything that is not supposed to be in his fence. They are VERY territorial and will defend it FIERCELY! He is very tame and seems to hang around my deer pens constantly which I love! Don't seem to bother us at all. They do Bray a lot, but all that is, is "Stay out of My Area"!!! It's cool because he (Spencer) cent marks by rolling on the ground in the same places on all corners of the pen. They also pee and poop in selected locations as cent marking. His eyes and ears are invaluable to me while asleep and at work. I just started out deer farming and couldn't imagine ever doing it without Spencer or another one like him! He is definitely the first one on the scene when there is a disturbance![/QUO

That is cool to know that about donkeys. If I was setup for that I would really look into it. Maybe at some point that would be a option. I do appreciate the info.

That is a crappy feeling when you go out to your pen and there is blood pools and hide everywhere. I think my doe with the broken leg is starting to come along on her road to recovery barring any set backs. I was lucky like you they couldnt get in due to the frozen ground and I am putting up shade cloth up and I will also be putting up a electric fence. I am hoping to get this done soon in case the dog or coyote comes back. Did you solve the problem with the dogs that came and did this to your deer?

Know how everybody feels, dogs have become my worse fear. Got home from work about a month ago and there was a dog running the fence and when I seen some of the does the calmest ones was the ones hurt the worse. Its funnt how my dogs dont bother them but a strange one they become very wild.

Good read Lanasvet,

I wouldn't really call Spencer a Mini. Coyotes are my main concern. Large dogs (the size it would take to hurt Spencer) will have a tough time getting over or under my perimeter fence. If they start digging,,, he will be there! Coyotes on the other hand, find a way in somehow.

Dave not sure if you have heard but we have a bill going threw the capital to allow the county to offer bounty on yotees

I didn't hear about that Bryan. I heard about the St Louis Park story the other day where the coyotes were laying in peoples yards and weren't afraid of them. They were also killing their pets there. I looked up that bill you are talking about and pulled this video up. Here is the link below.
