Dammmm- Shannon. I loved your last email or blog. Know that I stand with you. The reason I wrote this thread was because of the very words you taped. Why the assocc. does nothing for me!"

We have both heard that cry from their hearts a hundred times. I realize the state associations are doing what they feel is best. But the hobby farmer that has been there for years feels the state ***. have forgotten them. With out pointing fingers, what am I, you or our associations doing for them. We could say we got you under the DOA, and they would say we were better off 10 years ago under the Game commission with no regulations at all.

Shannon the next time some one says to you What does the ***, do for me. Look them in the eyes and with all you heart ask them what they would like you to do. I guarantee you will have some one who will support you and work with you

Shannon I hear you and I pray this thread may bring more members to your state as we work together toward unity not division.

Shannon I feel compelled to tell you this, God has heard and honors the cry of you heart to help the little ones. Be not a respecter of persons and God will bless you and your Association.

When we respect some one we put them above another. When we love all are treated equal.

Andy, I do think most of your intentions are in the right place. I am on the board here in Wisconsin and you can ask my fellow board members that I almost always think of the little guy first. The hobby guys in my eyes are just as important as the top guys. I do think most all of your board members have that same approach. There are very few guys who have not lost money or animal value in the past year. Last year about 40% of my retirement fund disappeared also. Will it recover? only if I stick it out, if I pull out and run now it will be lost forever.(Last half of 09 was pretty good)

Here in Wisconsin we only have about 25% of the licenced deer farms as members of WOW and I am at a loss on how to change that. If you or anybody has any ideas on how to change that I am all ears. I have made phone calls to people to try to get them to join and have been told " Why the assocc. does nothing for me!" Without the great people who got together, founded and built our assocc there would be no deer farming in this state but yet that is out there.

All that being said this is still a great buisiness or hobby. Stay Possitive, help your board out, have fun, raise big healthy deer and we will be alright!

Shannon. After reading your last sentence. All that being said this is still a great business or hobby. Stay Positive, help your board out, have fun, raise big healthy deer and we will be alright!

Know that you are prophesizing good things for you and your state ***. And all states.

If I lived in your state you would be on the top of my list to but shooters from.

Continue to run the race and do not grow weary.

WISDOM.You are right they are gods creations and control is mans but remember one thing. The antis out there are man also and they have strong numbers. If we dont all stick together in one form or another they WILL win.I am not even a member of ny *** because i have never even heard of one.I am a member of PDFA and will stay up here and do my best with the fight. It is so bad up here that a member of the ag team that comes to our farms believes that deer should not be behind a fence so what kind of chance do you think ny has.AND WE PAY THIS GUY!!!!!!!!!

You just hit on one of the hidden motives this thread it pushing to get accomplished. You hit the nail on the head by looking ahead. You are one of those blind guys who in reality is a seer. (have to read a past blog to get it).

Our industry is changing from the inside out wheatear we like it or not.

The breeding market is some what saturated. Evidence of this is declining prices.

The hunting shooter market in somewhat saturated. Evidence in this is declining prices.

To correct both of these problems we need to think of ways to neutralize the canned hunt image among other issues.. So that when people think of hunting whether it be high fence, low fence or no fence. They take of the bias rose colored glasses of canned hunts and now are open minded to hunt deer where ever they find the best opportunity and value. Open minded so not be objective about their neighbor raising deer.

To neutralize the canned hunt image we have to advertise. When we advertise we open up a door to become a target as I did writing this thread.

Like you, I feel our next battle will be from the anti’s. Are we ready for this battle. Not really. Because most but not all our focus, talk and advertising still revolves around breeding.

Before we can effectively advertise we need extra money and strong associations. New members will bring in some of that money along with ideas and man power uniting us to carry on this battle.

I feel the up and downs in our indrustry is a direct reflection of our current economy. The hunters are just not willing to invest in a hunt when they are losing 30% instead of gaining it on there investments. As far as the PDFA goes, there are all different types of people on the board (perserve owners, successful breeders, mid-range farms, and the hobby farmers ). We as a board have a great working relationship with the Dept. of Ag. The doors are always open at the meeting. Dates and times are posted on the pdfa website. It is a lot easier to sit on your butt and complain than step up and do something about it. There are only 15 board members and from what I are hearing people expect the board to do the work of a thousand people. Everyone should step up and do what they can to help instead of sitting back and complaining. Would it not be great if there were 200+ people at every meeting volunteering to help do things. I remeber when the pdfa was first started there were well over 75 people at every meeting at Russ`s. There needs to be more of the what can I do for pdfa not what does it do for me!!!! We all pick our own path in life but we all should walk down the same road together. GET INVOLED WITH YOUR ASSOCIATION FROM EVERY LEVEL STATE AND NATIONAL !!!!!!!!

Thanks

Greg Lucas

pretty simple the way i see, take some talk, and each state buy few deer yr. to shoot . Or give to somebody. the little guy.time they talk. i shot that big deer!!! it only few yrs. to change the way some feel. about the fence. givem a hunt, they never forget rest is history.oh yes and more deer will be needed from this.throw away any list start new. (TALK ) a little pull together if possible Dc

It funny as I sat down to write I had a vision of hundreds of buzzards in the sky circling and waiting in the comfort of the air that kept them afloat.

A vision is a thought that almost seems real. Some call it day dreaming. But it can be much more.

I must say I am a little disappointed that not a single person has answered the questions that Harry and I ask. Not one. I admire all the people and their comments who got on this thread and described my character more then the ones who are still circling.

The only side we are asking you to be on is to support your state ***. Or why you do not support your state ***. Other words we want you to get involved. This is your industry. Support it with as little or as much as you can but support it. We need your comments. Fly like eagles.

Please answer the questions we ask in a non judgmental way to help our industry deal with issues with in..

#1 Which direction should our State associations focus on. You may give several suggestions starting with the most important.

#2 Also if you are not a member of a State Association. Be honest and tell us why.

#3 If you were a member and did not rejoin. Please be honest and also tell us why.

Please speak up.

#4 What the major issues at hand that your state association is tackling right now.

#5 If you don't know what they are doing as an association... Be honest and tell us why.

I would love to get in on this but I know nothing about what is going on in PA. The last time I was there I was hauled off on a stretcher and dont remember much,Harry followed the ambulance to the hospital and stayed with me until they let me go back to the auction,Thanks again Harry. Darren

Darren yes we all remember . Many of us silently prayed for you. I personally stood over you and said a prayer. Rebuking the spirit of infirmity that was crucified on the cross 2000 years ago. And as others, we prayed for your life and healing.

All as I was touched by Harry’s compaction and fast thinking to do what needed to be done.

You did not want me to take you to the hospital I did not know where the exit in the building was let alone the hospital.

I suffered a grand maul seizure, I have had every test known to man done since then and they dont know why it happened.I know that God was looking over me,I nearly chewed my tounge in half and I was very sore from my body tensing up for several days.I am on seizure med now and hope that it never happens again. Thanks for all of the prayers,I know thats what got me through it.I was back from the hospital in time to represent my lots, thanks to everyone who was at the PA aucution,I didnt mean to slow the auction down.If I said I didnt want you to take me to the hospital I was just not thinking right,I dont remember anything until I was in the emergncy room. This year's term was "Political Correctness."

The winner wrote:

"Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a

delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an

unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the

proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd

by the clean end"

Some one I know had a plaque placed on their wall, most thought it was insightful and had meaning and merritt, the plaque read......

"If your going to be a turd... go out into the yard and lie down"

Once we build an association together we have to protect it and its assets to be good stewards. It confuses everything. Even love get redefined as that which protects the association and unloving as to who do not.

We give our affection to those who serve our interest.

We are new to the Industry, and we are as small as you can get. But you have to start some where. We are not members and I can't really give a definite reason to why. I have gone to several meetings, the first of which they were voting in new board members, so it wasn’t a normal meeting. I have gone to a couple more to see what they were about. It was kind of a turn off when I started talking with guys I found that this guy didn’t like that guy and this guy thought that that elk guy was only worried about elk and this elk guy thought that the deer guy was only worried about deer. It just seemed like from the outside looking in, there was a lot of in fighting or bickering going on. I realize that when you have this much money on the line things can get ugly fast. I think a lot of it can come down to jealousy as well. Weather it is admitted or not. It is easy as a small guy to look at the bigger guys and think that it must be nice. Well yeah it should be nice because in my eyes they didn’t get to where they are at by sitting on their *****, they had to work for it and take some risks along the way just like anything else. To be honest I want to make a living with our deer farm and part of me is afraid that once we become a member we will be put into one category or the other regardless of what we do or how we act ethically. So maybe it would be easier to be unknown and under the radar instead of a target. Should I become a member, yes. Will we become a member? I’m sure we will at one point. Does my opinion matter as a deer farmer even if I’m not? I would like to say yes but I realize that I haven’t put forth the effort to find out. I’m not wanting to piss anyone off, just thought that I would answer the question. We may not all like each other and agree with the next guy, but I imagine none of us want to go out of business or get ran over by the gov. so there is a common ground for all.

Forgot to add i'm from Pa.

Im from ny and im in the pa asso because i didnt know we even had one when i joined.NY is so far behind in the deer bizz compared to other states.I see pa and other states in mag,on tv and computer.I am going to join our asso and mabey change things but im only one person and if the state does not want deer farmers or ranches we are going nowhere.I just cant figure out how pa brings in so much money for the state and ny is so close to pa but ny has zero.I guess it all goes back to the state itself and the people that are in charge of that states asso.It will be a long road.

This was a great post! I have heard some others talk that they are not members of their state orgs for the same reasons.

This is a great example of why this thread should not have been started in the first place. Having a differing opinion is fine. Outline your thoughts in a formal and professional way and present them to the board. But criticizing someone on an open forum just causes more distraction from the issues and leads to a divide among the industries growers.

I really would like to that Deer and Elk discussion forums for allowing us the opportunity of free speech to discuss the positives and negatives that affect our lives, our friendships and our industry.
