what to feed?

our ration has :field peas, lentils, whole wheat, whole oats, we are using the screenings (weed seeds ,wild oats(high fat content),millet)as filler brings the fiber up to 21% protein 15% TDN 80% , all hammered into <1mm and pelleted into a 3/16 pellet standard mineral pac and added powered limestone PRICE $180.00/TONNE (2200 LBS)

We attended a seminar put on by Purina a while ago and they had some pelleted feed that was 18 percent protein and I forget the fiber etc., but the percents looked pretty good. Well it was made from sawdust and clay!!!!! Yeah, the point was to not just look at the percents on the label but to know the nutritional value. It just reinforced the need to deal with a reputable company that knows what they are doing. Purina has been in this business a long time and done a ton of research and continues to do research. We trust their product.

Purina makes a product called.high octane .. It is also very high in fat..i use it more than anything

They make a product called Amplify that is high fat and we have used on occasion if we had a deer that was run down or needed to put on some weight.

Ok, I have another question.

Do you feed your does a different feed when they are nursing fawns.

I was looking at maybe feeding the does a dairy goat ration just before fawning and while they are nursing.

Noticed that AntlerMax does not show to have any vitamins in it. Do you provide minerals to solve this problem or something else.

We don't feed any additional minerals. I'm quite sure that Antlermax has minerals in it. The only additional feed we give is alfalfa and a small amount of corn.

I used to feed the 16% and my deer did good on it. I jumped to about $17.00 a bag when buying by the ton. I read the analysis on purina web site and found this. Didn't know what to think.

Dont forget when figuring out what feed to factor in there browse(if any) and alfalfa ect. given .The levels in these vary depending upon soil grown in and at what growth stage they were cut.I am told protein levels can vary from 4-20 percent ,there is a such thing as too much protein. Its all confusing Our deer farmers in southeast Pa have paid nutritionists to help us come up with deer specific blends my doe feed runs 580 per ton and buck blend is around 760 per ton.

we also test our soil levels and water.

I was offered a ton of "free" purina feed so i put 1/3 of it in with my regular feed blend my deer didnt like it that was always the last they ate in the feeders .

I also adjust my feed blend from summer to winter(less corn in summer ) digesting corn makes heat. This has to be done in small amounts ,too much corn has been known to kill deer .I recently had a call from someone who was in a panic all of the sudden he's loosing deer and not sure why.I asked if he had started adding corn and he said he had just switched to all corn ,he went back to his old feed and no more problems.

just my 2 cents

Dean

Too much corn can cause accidosis which will kill a deer. This will kill the bacteria in their digestive tract and they will die. You have to be careful how much corn you add.

why would it kill penned Deer ? And Not wild Deer ?

Just curious ? Thanks

How much corn is to much? 25% to much ? 50% to much? How much is to much????????

Thanks Joe

Heres a pretty interesting study. Pretty dense material however.

DelGiudice G.D., D. L. Mech, U.S. Seal. 1994. NUTRITIONAL RESTRICTION AND ACID-BASE BALANCE IN WHITE-TAILED. Journal of Wildlife Diseases 30:247-253.

It will kill both pen and wild deer a like. In the wild however they have more options for other browse. It seems like a lot of corn consumption is needed to achieve acidosis.

The problem is that deer will pick out the corn from a mixed blend and eat it first. So we try to keep our mix to 25% or less of corn.

I have feed the Wild deer on my farm all the whole kernel corn (they DO NOT like cracked corn) for 10+ years sometimes I have had them consume 200lbs in 12 hours or less from my feed table less than 100 yards from my front door Sept to late March and NEVER seen a Decrease in the number of deer numbers on My farm.........I don't buy the theory that "To Much Corn" Will kill deer..........Just from my own prolonged observations!

I have also found My pen deer are less than fond of large amounts of cracked corn in their diet either.

No Wayne I stopped buying it when it hit $14 a bag. I told um I wouldn't be back. I get mine mixed and they put vitiman A D and E in it and some other good stuff for $11.50. They are doing well.
