Has Dr. Shipley at the UofI given any treatment recommendations? Are you IL farmers in touch with him? Please advise if you hear any good information. Thanks, lana

Here is what I have found and is working perfect.

Sample every deer you sedate and test it!!!!!!!!!

I drive my samples to the University Vet school for testing. Your local Vet can mail it, just takes a few more days.

I was worried about EHD, but its similar to B/T. We have a mister system in all our pens that are timed to spray 14 times per day. Its hard to find a fly, let alone a mig in our pens. But, with that said!

I have had some animals get sick in the last few days. Im use to dealing with pneumonia during the hot dry weather, but these guys just didnt seem right. The first one I tested showed + for blue tongue.

Im going to cover the symtoms then my treatment. Please dont trust my treatment, although its working perfect for me, consult your vet!!!!!!

My deer are breathing heavy/ mouth open when its still cool.

Looking confused.

Walking lightly, which I think is sore joints from fever.

constant blinking.

Arched back.

Just over all odd acting.

3 out of the 5 I have treated have had a temp over 105.9

Its the high temp that kills them!

The only way to check the temp is to sedate them. Its hot, and there sick, bad time. But, an ounce of treatment is worth a pound of cure.

Here is what I do.

If they show 2 or more of the signs.

I dart them.

Check temp ( First thing to do)

If its infection high, I immediately place them on a tarp. Put bags of ice covering there entire body. ( due to ambient ground temp, I put a garden hose under them to carry the cool from the ice)

Start fluids, subQ. ( I do subQ because EHD and B/T compramise the vascular system) I add Dextrose to my ringer solution.

I administer

4cc dexajet per 100lb im

5cc exceed per 100 subQ

6cc vitB complex subQ

Then I continue the fluids and sedation until the fever drops to 101.

I follow up daily, dex one day, draxxine the next. ( dart) for 6 days.

If they dont have the fever, I just give the first treatment and reverse when its time. Then follow up with draxxine in 2 days. Watching there systems to see if I need to include medication to help them.

I hope this helps. Im early in this but its working perfect for me. I think the biggest thing is the ice bath if they have a high temp. Cool them fast and it helps greatly.

Id be interested to here any comments or success stories.

Here's what we use for EHD prevention & insect control. Call or email me for information.

What exactly are the typical symptoms of EHD...the early and late ones(right before death)??

I am up in Northwestern Illinois, and we've never had the problem up here that I know of.

Had a friend that had a pet doe that just died 2 days ago, and it carried symptoms and acted like I'd never seen before...that's why I suspect EHD as a possibility.

Appreciate a heads up on what the symptoms are....

Mark, the first thing you will see is separation from the group of deer they are with. They will be a little lathargic at first. Some also show tender feet. From there it only gets worse. Ears drop, fever, very lathargic, drooling, very approachable, i've seen them go blind, heavy breathing leading to a slow and brutal death. I would liken it to putting you in side a car, crack the windows some, park it in the sun and let you die a slow death. Getting just enough air to keep you hanging on for awhile.

Wayne - Thank you!

Sounds like it could very well have been EHD that this deer died from.

She was larthargic at first, way more approachable than normal, seemed delirious, ears did drop, breathing at least somewhat heavy, and although I did not take this deer's temp, when I put my face against this doe's nose, it almost felt hot, so I believe she was burning up.

And the one symptom that I did not witness but was reported to me by the owner who was up with this doe during her last and final night, was that she appeared blind...she kept running into things as if she couldn't see. And yep, slow and brutal. My friend said she never wanted to go through that with a deer again...not ever!

So, concerning her other 2 deer(bucks) and 3 fawns that are in this same pen...is there something that I should tell her to do in way of ''prevention'' thereof for her other deer, or is it a waiting, watching, and praying game now at this point?

Thanks again Wayne...gonna call her now and read your response here to her.

mark,

I am sorry to hear about your friends deer......I think the best thing she can do is spray her pens to keep the midges from biting her other deer........this EHD is so out of control something has got to be done.......I am just waiting for it to hit here in PA if it hasn't already......

Thanks Dennis...I will call her now and pass that on.

Yeah...it does sound out of control.

A fellow deer farmer called me yesterday in response to my questions here. He is from Pike County(West-Central Illinois), and he told me that in a 3/4 mile stretch of creek he recently walked, he found 9 dead deer, and 2 that seemed to be headed to death that were laying along the creek acting sick/lathargic, as in not running off. (I'm talking deer in the wild here.)

I don't know the stats, but it sure seems that EHD accounts for more deaths in the wild than CWD ever has. The big numbers that have accumulated from ''CWD deaths'' have all been the result of the DNR sharp shooters shooting healthy deer in what seems like a feeble and senseless attempt to erradicate a problem that in my opinion has very aptly been around for as long as deer have.

Seems like the ''cure'' is much worse on the deer than the cause(CWD).

Is the DNR doing anything at all to address the EHD problem in the wild?

Is there anything that can be done?

Mark it's kinda like Russian roulette? You don't know which deer will be next. It doesn't discriminate. However, If you have been fogging or spraying in advance to combat it some, you can put the odds in your favor.

Two years ago, EHD culled at least 80% of wild deer populations in my part of Illinois (about 30 miles south of Chicago). It was so bad that the dead deer rotting literally could be smelled for miles around. The local DNR people arranged for hunters/sharp shooters to kill affected(?) deer and also collected the dead animals and burned them during peak times every weekend for several weeks in August 2010.

I think it's most important to discuss how to treat the EHD once symptoms appear, and I appreciate Renegade's(?) very detailed instructions above. Thank you for your effort. I have printed this and given it to the rehabber's and their DVM.

Renegade, you are so right about trying to break the fever immediately and consistently for days. High fever will make all mammals lose their eyesight if it goes on for long... Thanks again for your insight.

lana

What chemical is everyone misting to kill the fly's in there pen's. And is it not harmful to the deer.

Update

Every deer that showed signs and I treated is still alive and looking normal.

I have not lost one deer to this. Its crazy because I was worried for the worse.

Dr. Alber's and the others were on the right track.

Everything I did seems to have worked.

renegade...would you be so kind as to list your protocol?...it would be greatly appreciated!! for Sure!!

Lanasvet.....just asking.....how many deer do you have in Your herd? How long have you been in the whitetail farming? I am just curious......you seem to have a lot of knowledge of the Whitetails.....and I only noticed you starting to post on this forum in the last year......

Dennis,Lanasvet has been here longer than I have & certainly has contributed more.I also thought this forum was about all deer & not just whitetail. Since I'm on a rant, I thought I'd throw that up too.

Now, I don't have any whitetail but I think I might have just enough deer to be "one of the boys" in most cartels or cliques & I value the contribution that Lanasvet makes to this forum & anyone needing particular help or information.

Dennis, I know your a fairdinkum sort of a bloke,& hope this finds you well & in good spirt.

Cheers Mate
