Wanna Guess "The BIG RIG" Score!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tyler,

Out of curiosity, how exactly did you guys get the blood flow stopped after cutting. Thanks for the info and I'm glad Big Rig came out ok. That's one magnificent animal!

We tried numerous thing from blood stop to a torch, we finally got it slowed down to the point were we got toothpicks in the blood vessels. We then very slowly pulled the toothpicks out while squeezing super glue around the picks, allowing the glue to work its way down to the blood source and basically clot it. Not sure if this method will work for anyone else but we were running out of ideas and anything was worth a try before he bled to death on the table.

I have most certainly not ever removed antlers from a deer that big! I have taken some antlers off of several legitemate 300-350"+ deer. What worked best for me was first using a thick latex tourniquet tied several times underneath the bur. Then using a hot iron similar to one used to de-horn a calf like this one in the link. http://www.jefferslivestock.com/goat-n-calf-dehorner/camid/LIV/cp/L5-GA/ The one I used had a sharper point and a long flat side. I would carefully burn my way around the base of the antlers paying special attention to the veins that were bulging, to the point I would burn the skin till it peeled back and bare bone was exposed. After doing this all the way around the bur I would use a new blade on a bone saw and remove the antler about 1 1/2 " above the bur. After taking off both antlers, I would have some one standing next to me with lots of paper towel and we would remove the tourniquet. On occasion I would have missed a vein that was tucked in one of the ridges on the antler, blood would come out quite fast! We would quickly get paper towel on it, then take the paper towel off and quick put the iron on the vein till the blood stops. I will see if I can find pictures on my external today of the antlers that I removed this way. This is what worked for me, it is something I would recommend.
