Our Industry, 8000 Deer Farmers, Only 300 Attend Auctions

ddwhitetails said:
I would like to see where these auctions have a certain percentage of their consignments that go to the new deer farmers.......the problem is the auction folks know they will make more money off the well known farmers animals and thats why the little guy gets looked over. It should be to the best interest of all the auction people to get more of the deer farmers involved as it promotes competition within the industry and that is a good thing......

DDWhitetails I like this idea as well. We might even go as far as having a special center section dedicated to the new deer farmers and really put out a good showing for them. Maybe say 10% of all the lots would go to new deer farmers. So say we have a 200 lot sale to make it easy 20 of those lots would be just for the new guys or guys that have never sold deer at auction before. GREAT INPUT DDWHITETAILS! Thank You!

This is where I wanted this forum to go in the first place. Keep em coming guys, I am getting "EXCITED" now!!!

Dennis your a but kisser. Eric better watch telling dennis you are excited he might take it the wrong way.

Eric, glad you thought of it too...lol and since i'm a new farmer and have made several purchases from your sales then I'll take one of those 2wide fawns that will be born shortly. I will promise to breed her to something good and donate a doe fawn back. Just let me know when she is born.... Thanks again ol' buddy

Michael I'll tell ya what I'll do. I will donate a doe bred at the PA Deer Breeders Fall Sale to be given away to a new deer breeder. I only have 12 breedable does and I too am a new deer farmer, but I want to make this industry the best it can be. So you gotta a deal. Call me with how this idea should work and we will need to get the perimeters in place to qualify. I will bet I can get 2 or 3 more to do the same but I want every a bunch of new deer breeder there. I will even go as far as to say that the new breeders don't even have to purchase anything, just sign up (they will have to meet a certain criteria, and I will leave that up to Michael since he thought of the idea).

Thanks again Micheal, and I will make it a "2WIDE" Bred Doe as I have a few straws in the tank!

I can't think of a more accurate way to find the value of anything than having multiple buyers and sellers with plenty to choose from. Value is by definition the price willing buyers and sellers agree on. If I had the elite deer, the auction is where they would go. Personally I don't like the haggling over trying to sell anything so if somebody can sell them for me and get a fair price then I am satisfied.

Eric,

Thanks that would be cool and maybe if you started something like that the other auctions would follow suit. I do also agree that there should be some type of way of limiting the time spent on certian consignments.....not sure how you would do it....i realize that some consignments are worthy of spending a little more time on.......but it needs to be because of the deers genetics not because of who is selling the deer..if you know where I'm goin with that. I don't think there needs to be any introductions by the deer farmers.......let the pedigree speak for itself...there is a lot of time wasted when these guys get up there and start beggin for more money.........I do believe if the introductions were cut way down or illiminated completely you would be able to fit a lot more consignments in.......i do realize you need to give it your best effort to get a good price for the animals you are selling......but there really is a lot of talking that goes on and prolongs the whole auction.

eric, don't take all for criticism and listen to what some of the guys are saying... If a few changes are made then i believe more will attend...

Awe shucks, I am not nearly as bad as I sound on here. I am just passionate about our industry. Heck I may even bring it on myself sometimes with out even knowing that I am doing it. Thanks for the reply's and I am making a list of these ideas for the upcoming auctions this fall.

Again Thanks to everyone!

Keep the ideas coming. It took a while to get there, but I new you all had it in ya.

Eric,

In all honesty it is refreshing to know that you do care about the industry as much as you do and that the little guys do count to......hey you got to start somewhere and you can never get bigger if you can't get your foot in the door!

Eric ,a bred doe or a fawn?

Wayne, Bred Doe. The new deer farmer that gets her can either keep her or the fawns and breed her back then he has to give her away the next year at the same auction. To make this all fair, if and when she dies, I will revert back to the first guy that had twin doe fawns and he will have to give up one of her offspring and so forth. If we keep this thing going, I'll bet I can get some "BIG GUYS" to donate a straw of semen to put in her each year, these fawns should be stacked in a couple of years, not that they aren't already. I don't have any bad deer ya know, LOL!

Just curious....what are you guys going to use to determine who is a NEW deer farmer? Would this be a farmer that has just started in the past year?

A new farmer has not put in one cycle ...... breeding through breeding, need to see it all once.....still learnning ten years later

Dennis why don't you and Michael Peters get together and help me set the criteria for that. i would appreciate it. I think the first rule should be it has to be a deer farmer with agood standing facilty CWD, TB & Bruc all in order, and have never bought at an auction before. What do you think. That leaves the door wide open for anyone in attendance, and does not make them have to buy anything. I want them to attend the auctions because of the good folks that they can meet and the connections that can be made at an event like an auction. Fill the auctions with excitement and we can get this industry moving in the right direction again.

Michael Peters phone number is in the NADeFA directory. If you can not find it I will have it for you. Call me 660.825.2006 or 660.342.5851.

Thanks

Eric

Eric, what if you had some straws of semen donated and raffled them off at the auction... you have to be present to win.. It would cost nothing to enter ..?? Do the raffle at a set time and where it don't confuse people when it will happen... If you had several prizes it would be pretty diversified ....

one year basicly, fawning , antler growth, rut and breeding, winter, spring mud and all the things that can happen at different times in the year. you can usually tell when they only call you for the really important stuff not that a doe has some "sleep" in the corner of her eye, they are not newbys anymore when they ask only about med doses and hang up and carry on

Eric,

That is a good idea ....but how would you ever be able to know if they bought from an auction or not? this would be hard to track down wouldn't it? I thinm it is a great idea but it needs to be easy to track........and you don't want people finding ways to take advantage of a good thing so it has to be monitored somehow.

Dennis our auction company has on file, every person that has purchased at auction from us in the last 3 years. If they have then they will not qualify. I want this to truly be for the new guys or the rookies as some say. We need them. No everyone is a Albert Einstein but there is another one of them out there some where!

Curtis I am having a little trouble following you. Start over and tell me what you are saying again. Sorry, I am just not following ya. Or maybe some one else can explain what Curtis is trying to convey here.
